Most South African business owners know they should be measuring their digital marketing ROI โ€” but few actually do it systematically. The result: decisions made on gut feeling rather than data, good channels underfunded, and poor channels kept running because nobody tracked what they generated. Here's a practical, no-jargon guide to measuring what matters.

The ROI Formula (And Why It's Not Enough Alone)

The basic formula: ROI = (Revenue from marketing โ€“ Cost of marketing) รท Cost of marketing ร— 100

Example: you spend R20,000/month on Google Ads (including management). That generates 40 leads. Of those, 8 convert into customers at an average value of R5,000 each. Revenue attributed: R40,000. Cost: R20,000. ROI: 100% โ€” or a 2:1 return.

But the formula only works if you know which customers came from which channel โ€” which is where most businesses fall down. Attribution is the real challenge.

The Tracking Setup You Need

Google Analytics 4: Install on your website and set up conversion events for form submissions, phone call clicks, WhatsApp button clicks, and (for e-commerce) purchases. GA4 is free and gives you a channel-by-channel view of traffic and conversions.

Google Ads conversion tracking: Link your Google Ads account to GA4 and import conversion events. This tells Google Ads which ad clicks led to real conversions โ€” essential for Smart Bidding to work.

Meta Pixel: Install on your website and set up standard events (Lead, Purchase, ViewContent). Connects your website behaviour to your Meta campaigns.

UTM parameters: Tag all links in emails, social posts, and ads with UTM parameters (source, medium, campaign) so GA4 can attribute traffic correctly. Google's Campaign URL Builder generates these for free.

CRM or lead tracker: A spreadsheet, HubSpot Free, or Pipedrive โ€” any system that logs where each lead came from, whether they converted, and what they were worth.

A Simple Monthly Marketing Report Template

Your monthly report should answer five questions:

  1. How many leads did we generate, by channel?
  2. What did each lead cost us, by channel?
  3. How many leads converted into customers?
  4. What was the total revenue attributed to marketing this month?
  5. What changed versus last month, and why?

Start here. Add complexity as your tracking matures. A simple report you actually read monthly is infinitely more valuable than a sophisticated dashboard nobody looks at.

The Attribution Problem

In reality, most customers touch multiple channels before converting. They might click a Google Ad, visit your site, see a Meta retargeting ad three days later, and then convert after searching your name organically. Giving full credit to the last click (standard attribution) understates the value of awareness channels. Data-driven attribution (available in GA4 for accounts with enough conversions) distributes credit across all touchpoints โ€” and tells you a more accurate story.

For most South African SMEs, last-click attribution is fine to start with. The goal is any measurement at all, then improve it over time.
