TikTok has grown rapidly in South Africa over the past two years, and the question we're increasingly getting from clients is: should we be advertising on TikTok? The honest answer depends heavily on your audience, product, and creative capacity. Here's what you actually need to know.
The South African TikTok Audience
TikTok in South Africa is predominantly a younger platform: the core audience is 18โ34 year olds, with the heaviest usage among 18โ24s. If your target market skews over 40, TikTok's organic or paid reach to them will be limited. Where TikTok excels in the SA market: beauty and skincare, fashion and streetwear, food and restaurants, fitness and wellness, entertainment, and youth financial products (short-term loans, student insurance, youth banking).
South Africa has approximately 8โ10 million TikTok users as of 2026 โ significant but smaller than Facebook's SA user base of 18+ million. For highly targeted niches, this means smaller available audiences and potentially higher CPMs than you'd experience globally.
TikTok Ad Formats
In-Feed Ads: appear in the "For You" feed between organic videos. The most common format; supports video up to 60 seconds (15โ30 seconds performs best). Can include a CTA button (Shop Now, Learn More, Download).
TopView: the first thing users see when they open TikTok โ a premium placement for maximum awareness. Expensive; typically reserved for large brands with major campaign budgets.
Branded Hashtag Challenge: encourages users to create content around your brand. High engagement potential, very high cost. Not suited to most SMEs.
Spark Ads: boost your own organic TikTok posts or creator content as paid ads. Often the most cost-effective TikTok ad format for brands with strong organic content.
TikTok Ads Cost in South Africa
TikTok Ads Manager has a higher minimum campaign budget than Meta โ typically USD $50 per day ($1,500/month minimum) โ which at current exchange rates is approximately R900/day or R27,000/month in minimum ad spend. This immediately positions TikTok as a more expensive entry point than Facebook or Google for South African SMEs.
CPM (cost per 1,000 views) in South Africa: approximately R30โR80, broadly comparable to Meta. Cost per click is typically R3โR12. Cost per lead varies enormously based on creative quality and offer.
Creative That Works on TikTok
TikTok rewards authenticity more than any other platform. Polished, branded video that looks like a TV commercial typically performs worse than a phone-shot video that blends into the organic feed. The mantra at TikTok is "Don't make ads, make TikToks" โ and it applies directly to South African advertisers.
What works: trending audio tracks (with licensed use via TikTok's Commercial Music Library), native text overlays, hooks in the first 2 seconds, and creators who already understand the platform's language. If your brand can produce 2โ3 content variations per week and test them quickly, TikTok's performance can be impressive. If you need 4 weeks of approvals for every piece of content, the platform's pace will frustrate you.
Should You Advertise on TikTok?
Yes, if: your audience is under 35, your product is visual, your brand can produce short-form video content quickly, and you have at least R30,000/month in ad spend to invest.
Not yet, if: your audience skews older, you can't produce video content consistently, your minimum ad spend is under R15,000/month, or your Google Ads and Meta campaigns aren't already profitable โ fix those first.
TikTok is a high-upside channel for the right brands in the SA market. But it requires creative investment and a willingness to experiment that not every business is ready for.
